Why My Dishwasher is Not Draining

Is your dishwasher not draining? A clogged dishwasher will create inconvenience while working in the kitchen, the standing water in your dishwasher will produce a foul smell which could be disgusting. To escape from such situations, it’s good to know how to clean a dishwasher properly, this will prevent clog ups. 

Few Reasons why your dishwasher is not draining:

If water doesn’t go smoothly from your dishwasher, the first thing you have to do is figure out the root cause. The most common issues that lead to standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher include operating errors, broken parts, clogs, or malfunctioning parts. 

 If the motor isn’t working properly, it can cause problems. Test your motor’s dishwasher. 

Check the timing mechanism on your dishwasher and replace it if necessary.

Improper pump assembly could cause issues, or they could be debris blocking the wash impeller. 

The pump assembly works by belt, but it’s rare for it to fail. If it doesn’t work well, then it can’t pump the water out. If the dishwasher comes equipped with a drive belt, check and replace it if necessary. 

What to do if your dishwasher won’t drain?

Before troubleshooting the dishwasher ensure that the machine is in the off state.

Check for a blockage

Check if there are any blockages near the bottom of the dishwasher. If yes, use a small container to remove the water as much as you can. You can unclog the dishwasher by checking for food particles, paper, or other debris and removing them.

Remove debris from the filter

Find the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher. It should cover the base of the lower spray arm or at the back of the tub. Most dishwashers have come up with built-in grinders to process food particles and paper, but debris can still clog the filter. Clear away any debris you find.

Assess the drain hose

To remove blockages within the drain hose, just remove the hose from its current position. Loosen the clamps that hold the drain hose to the disposal. 

Check the garbage disposal

Remove the drain plug in your garbage disposal to ensure that the dishwasher isn’t clogged.

Clean the air gap

The air gap will be small. While running the dishwasher, check to see if water comes out of the air gap. If this is the case, there’s a blockage between the air gap and the garbage disposer. Remove the blockage then.

Check the drain valve

To test the valve, push on the valve bracket. Not all dishwashers have a drain valve, but if yours have it and seems to be frozen in a place, you may need a drain valve replacement.
